Google accused by Nokia, Microsoft, and others of using "Trojan Horse" to dominate mobile services

Google is facing accusations of anti-competitive behavior in Europe after a group of 17 companies - including Expedia, Microsoft, Nokia, and others - filed a complaint with the European Commission alleging that Google unfairly wields its power with Android to block competitors.
FairSearch.org filed a complaint claiming that Google uses Android as a "Trojan Horse to deceive partners, monopolize the mobile marketplace, and control consumer data." The coalition alleges that Google forces Android device makers to use Google products like Calendar and Gmail as default, preloaded applications in order to get the "Must-have" apps like Google Maps, Google Play, and YouTube. The group claims that this puts competing services like Outlook and Here Maps at a disadvantage because they are unable to reach deals with manufacturers to put their apps as the default solution on Android phones.
As a result of Android dominating the smartphone market, accounting for 70 percent of units shipped toward the end of 2012, Google has effectively made it impossible for non-Google products to gain a foothold in mobile, FairSearch claims.
This is not the first time that Google has faced claims of anti-competitiveness. Microsoft has accused Google of forcing manufacturers to use Google Search instead of Bing, and the company has also accused Google of purposely denying Windows Phone access to critical API's to build a full-fledged YouTube client. FairSearch members also include companies like Oracle, Trip Advisor, and Kayak who have had court cases with Google or accused the company of being a monopoly.
Thomas Vinje, counsel to FairSearch, issued the following statement about the group's accusation:
"We are asking the Commission to move quickly and decisively to protect competition and innovation in this critical market. Failure to act will only embolden Google to repeat its desktop abuses of dominance as consumers increasingly turn to a mobile platform dominated by Google's Android operating system."
